What happens to your questions — plain-language notice (DRAFT)
Draft. This must be translated into Kiswahili and Sheng by community reviewers (not by a model) and checked with legal advice on Kenya's Data Protection Act before it is shown to learners as final. It describes what the software does today; if the software changes, this changes first.
The short version
- You can ask Afribit AI questions without making an account.
- Never type your seed phrase, private key, PIN or password. If you do, the app refuses the message, does not store it, and does not send it to any AI.
- Afribit AI can be wrong. It is for learning, not financial advice. If someone asks you for your seed phrase, it is a scam.
What we keep
| What | Why | How long |
|---|---|---|
| Your questions and the answers, so your conversation is still there when you come back | So the chat works | It depends on how this assistant is set up, and the app tells you: never stored on the server (only on your phone), deleted after a number of days (30 on our public service), or kept until you delete them. Deleted chats can remain in encrypted backups for up to 14 days. |
| An account email and a scrambled (hashed) password, only if you register to contribute or review | So you can contribute | Until you ask to leave |
| A notification address, only if you turn on notifications | To send you the notifications you chose | Until you turn them off |
We do not sell your information. We do not use your conversations to train any AI. The AI does not learn from you; new knowledge enters only after community reviewers approve it.
Where your question goes
This depends on how the app you are using is set up. The app should tell you which.
- The public demo (cloud). Your question is sent to an AI provider over the internet. We ask for providers that promise not to keep or train on what they receive ("zero data retention"). It is still sent outside your community.
- A community node (the goal). A machine your community runs answers on your own network. Nothing leaves the network.
- A node that also uses a hosted "chef" (optional). A small AI on the local machine reads your words and writes a neutral English question with names, phone numbers and similar details removed. Only that goes to the hosted AI. Removal is not perfect, so please don't type personal details you don't need to.
Your choices
- Delete a conversation at any time from the conversation list, or all of them in Settings. They are deleted from the server straight away.
- If you have a contributor account, you can delete it from the contributor page.
- To see or correct anything else we hold about you, write to eddie@afribit.africa.
- You can always use the app without an account.
Questions or worries
Write to eddie@afribit.africa. If you find an answer that is wrong or unsafe, please tell us — it helps everyone.
For maintainers: keep this in step with data stewardship. Items still open there — legal review and the Kiswahili and Sheng versions — block calling this notice final.
